Yefim Bogolyubov vs. Alexander Alekehine
Round 10, September 21, 1922
ECO A90 – Dutch – “The Triple Queen Sacrifice”
The organizers of the Hastings chess congress decided to hold a masters tournament which would pit two English masters against four of the best from the European continent. The participants of the double round robin were Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, Siegbert Tarrasch, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates.
It was the last round and Alekehine needed to win to establish himself as a challenger to the World Champion Jose Capablanca, but he was tied with Akiba Rubinstein. Thus Alekehine had to win and hope Rubinstein was held to a draw or a loss while playing Sir George Thomas.
Clearly Alekhine has his work cut out for himself with the black pieces against Bogolyubov, a very strong player. Bogolyuboy used to say, “When I have white, I win because I have white, when I have black I win because I am Bogolyuboy.”
…and for the rest of the story…..
