1. e5 e5
2. f4 d5
3. exd5 e4
Position look: We have the well known Falkbeer counter gambit to the King’s Gambit, which is very sharp and tactical for both sides! Double edged is the Falkbeer!
4. d3 Nf6
5. dxe4 Nxe4
6. Nf3 Bc5
Position look: The most common ‘branch’ to this point; both sides are looking for a quick knock-out!
7. Qe2 Bf5
8. Nfd2 O-O
9. Nxe4 Bxe4 …an interesting branch here is O-O instead of the immediate Bxe4.
10. Be3 Bxe3
11. Qxe3 Bxc2
12. Qf3 Re8+
13. Be2 Be4
14. Qg3 Qxd5
Position look: White will finally achieve King safety by O-O; however, its Black that is a pawn up and, pressuring the opponent; at this point, can White say he has pressure or initiative? No, so White must find an idea…
15. Nc3 Qa5
16. O-O Qb6+
17. Kh1 Qxb2
Position look: Black now has a 3-1 pawn advantage for end-game play on the Queen side and is therefore, …winning. White must find an idea and quickly before play reaches the end-game.
18. Rab1 Qd2
19. Nxe4 Rxe4
20. Bd3
Position look: White finally has an idea; students, please give your thoughts here on what this idea is…
20. Re3?
21. Bxh7+ Kxh7
22. Qh4+ Kg8
23. Rbd1 Resigns
